The day after Laguna Seca, I lost 6th gear. My mechanic Ryan tore the tranny down and found out the selector sleeve is the problem. So, I am off to the parts store tomorrow to do some shopping. Going to get a few other minor things.

It isn't finished yet. He said the problem is the selector sleeve. He also still hasn't billed me for labor for 2 valve adjustments, 3 fluid changes in prep for track days, and an axle replacement and caliper replacements.

He is just waiting for his kids to get into college. Just hope he goes for something cheaper than USC.

He had everything back together last week. He took it for a test drive and heard a whining noise from the transmission. I went over to take a listen and at first would not go into any gear when I started the car. Then I was able to select 2nd, 3rd, & 4th, but not 1st. I didn't try 5th or 6th. So, I decided not to take it for a drive and he was going to pull it back out to see what went wrong.
This is becoming painful.

WOO-HOO...I got a tip on someone selling a transmission on S2ki in perfect working order with only 48k miles on it for only $200 up in Riverside. Paid $210 with Paypal fees. Driving up Friday to pick it up. I am STOKED!!

That sounds like a really good deal.
Did your guy ever figure out what went wrong with the original?

He wasn't sure, but he thought some of the shims inside were needing to be replaced and that was the cause. I guess this is where a lesson is learned to go to a transmission specialist, not just a regular mechanic.

Sounds like you got the same lesson I did.
I spent more $$$ rebuilding the engine in the Miata than a used low mileage one cost. And the used one would have been complete with sensors and other bits that could have been re-sold and covered about half of the total cost. Duh!
I took a trashed transmission apart a long time ago. You really need to know what you are doing to service one.

Forgot to update: picked up the tranny that Friday night and my mechanic had my car back to me that Monday. Already went on a drive on Oct 3rd and doing another Oct 17. "Flash" has a lot of miles to catch up on
